Maryland, there we went!

Well, obviously, the ambitious intentions we had to document the Maryland competition trip throughout the entire process went for naught.  Anyone not driving was trying to grab sleep and so the laptop sat dormant on the drive down while we tried to regain a bit of energy after about 4 straight days of making lists, running around looking for key ingredients (hey, London, Ontario retailers; collossal scallops--get some!) and then right before we left, packing and stacking a 5X8 trailer full of all the things necessary (and some things not really necessary) for our trip.
I know that Saucy Sue wrote a voluminous accounting of the first day of the trip and will probably get that uploaded here soon.  If Sue and Big Dog are anything like me, the past couple of days have been spent trying to get the body back on our 'regular' schedules after the trip.
So.... as for the contest, I feel we accomplished in large part what we set out to do.  That was to get Saucy Sue and Big Dog familiar with a bbq competition atmosphere and know what things need to be done and at what point.  As well, we wanted to work on the side categories of the Perdue Chicken entry and the Anything Butt offering.  With the Perdue chicken we overcame a last minute change in presentation (we had to submit in an aluminum pan provided by organizers rather than the platter we had originally intended to bring and use for this purpose), and came out in 4th place, out of an 84 team field, although not all entered the side categories.  For the Anything Butt, once again it was our maple-butter glazed salmon and we finished 10th in that categories.  Again, not 'championship' calibre, but close enough that we feel we have some things to work with when we go to the big Canadian Open later this summer.
There are some photos of our entries in these categories coming.  I have a few on my camera, but I had the patchcord out to see if it matched Sue's camera and now I can't find it; probably floating around somewhere in Big Dog's truck.
Anyway, just wanted to let you all know that we are back and will slowly be uploading our own thoughts and photos from this road trip as we get our 'sea legs' back under us!
